The God Cosmology & Esprit Bloodline

The true nature of the gods — and of Antaria itself — is the deepest secret in the story, revealed in stages from Chapter 28 onward and fully detonating in the Chapter 51+ material.

What the Gods Actually Are

The twelve Lord Gods and thirteen Dark Gods are not supernatural beings. They are 25 of the 100-strong crew of an exploratory starship called the Odyssey — crewed by a psychically-gifted people of Arche, launched from their home world on a project to reach a distant galaxy two million light years away. The ship was built around a psionic engine that amplified the crew's combined psychic power for the journey.

Arriving at a planet similar to Arche, the crew named it Antaria themselves — not knowing at the time that it was their own world's own deep past (see 'The Deepest Secret' below). The transdimensional leap took its toll immediately: 75 of the 100 crew fell into an unrecoverable coma on arrival — they are the Gods of Destruction, their souls and bodies destabilized by the impact and unable to recover. They became dormant husks that absorb spirit energy endlessly from everything around them. The remaining 25 survived with painful aftereffects, and waited for a follow-up expedition from home that never came.

Stranded, and finding that their bodies no longer aged, the 25 survivors bred plants and animals brought from Arche — and some went further, creating entirely new life forms resembling themselves: the Antarians, who worshipped their individual creators as gods and multiplied rapidly. Because each Antarian population revered a different creator as the one true god, the friction between the Antarians spread to the people of Arche themselves, driving the 25 survivors to split into two rival factions: the Physics faction, led by Captain Prios, and the Biology faction, led by former vice-captain Deimos.

The twelve Lord Gods — the Physics faction. Their approach to war: build giant piloted machines (Machina) and use gene-engineered human soldiers (the Esprit race) as their military. They treated their creations as servants and tools.

The thirteen Dark Gods — the Biology faction. Their approach to war: develop biological body-transformation abilities (Grima) and create a different gene-engineered race (the Devl). They believed their creations deserved equal treatment — this philosophical dispute with the Lord Gods is what originally sparked the war.

The Ragnarok War and Its Aftermath

The split between the two factions escalated into war — remembered in Antarian mythology as the Ragnarok, the event that created the world as its people know it. The Lord Gods initially had the advantage with their Machina; the Dark Gods responded by developing Grima and dark magic, creating parity.

A separate record found at the Island of the Crown (Chapter 28) describes the conflict in more specific — and not fully reconciled — terms: the Biology faction transformed their own bodies and turned on the Physics faction, who fought back with Machina. Their clash triggered an unforeseen catastrophe called the Great Collision — the 75 comatose crew members suddenly woke, but as rampaging monsters, destroying everything in their path with psychic power of their own. Unable to stop them even with their strongest weapon, the gods fled, relocated the Castle of Heaven to a remote island, and entered collective hibernation to buy the time needed to build an Ultimate Machina capable of standing against their transformed comrades — almost certainly the origin of Asmodeus. Two things are left open rather than guessed at: whether the Great Collision and the Ragnarok are the same event under two names or the Great Collision is a specific incident within the larger war, and whether the Gods of Destruction's rampage here is an earlier, active phase of the 'dormant husks' state described above or a genuine inconsistency between the two records.

With the gods absent, Antaria's people lived and built civilizations, gradually forgetting the true nature of their 'gods.' The whole history of kingdoms, empires, and wars that the characters inhabit is built on the foundation the gods left behind.

Inside the Dark Gods' faction, Veramod eventually staged a coup — killing some of his own colleagues and using their power for his own agenda. By the time the Black Prince finds the Dark God seals (Chapter 33), only Deimos remains. Deimos, who had always been sympathetic to humans, turns against Veramod's plan and grants the Black Prince his ultimate power.

Grima

The Esprit Bloodline

Esprit is the race created by the twelve Lord Gods to serve as their military — the Lord Gods needed humans strong enough to control Machina, and ordinary humans couldn't even board them. The Dark Gods answered in kind, creating the Devl (also called Devils) to wield Grima, giving them a special healing ability called Dark Blood to compensate for Grima's toll. The Esprit and Devl fought each other all through Ragnarok; when the Destroyers ended the war and the gods went into hiding, both races were left with power and no purpose. Their descendants carry these traits into the present — which is what this compendium calls the 'Esprit bloodline' and the 'Devl bloodline.'

This is, in fact, the founding myth of the story's two great powers: the Esprit used their Machina to muster neighbouring tribes and city-states into the Kingdom of Pandragon; the Devl used Grima to do the same and built the Geysir Empire. Time and intermarriage with ordinary humans faded both bloodlines' raw power long before the story starts, but people still believe the royal families of Pandragon and Geysir carry a gift handed down from the gods — which, genetically, they do.

The Pandragon royal family carries Esprit bloodline. This is why the royal sword Barisada activates the royal Machina Arondite — the key resonates with Esprit-bloodline spirit energy. It is also why Heaven's Castle responds only to G.S (the Black Prince), while neither Grishne nor Lacid can activate it: the fortress was built by the Lord Gods for their Esprit bloodline, and only someone carrying the right genetic signature can wake it.

The Kingdom Sword technique (Seolhwa Nanyeong) of the Pandragon royal house produces power levels beyond normal human limits — a Grima-adjacent amplification that comes from Esprit genetic modification rather than trained ability.

Genesis 4 adds a complicating detail: the Esprit gene modification has a known flaw. Under conditions of extreme emotional stress, Esprit carriers can suffer a specific neurological breakdown state — their higher reasoning collapses and they act on raw impulse. This is the biological explanation for Ice Pandragon's suicidal charge at Gratias: it was not just grief, it was the Esprit genetic defect triggering under the shock of watching his father die. The Black Prince references this as having observed it in the battle, which is how he knew Ice's charge was an opportunity rather than a genuine threat.
